New Balance Shoes!

Written by andy on August 21st, 2008 in GamersCircle.

These are by far the best shoes that I have ever owned/worn.  They are rugged and can really hold up to a young mans desire to run and play.

Oh yeah.. I run and play!  New Balance 926

100mbs vs 1Gbs?

Written by andy on August 16th, 2008 in Hardware.

Oh yeah… there is a difference:

Took about an hour, as I did a methodical wire by wire swappage.  I wanted to ensure that ever thing on the home network was working ok.

My Rig
Xbox360
Xbox
MediaVault
Jacks ‘puter
Printer
Downstairs Rear of house
Downstairs Front of house
Old file Server

Everything is online and seems to be working..  back to the project.

This was all possible via

Linksys WRT610N dual-N band router

Dungeons and Dragons with Cheese Cake?

Written by andy on August 16th, 2008 in GamersCircle.

On Friday, we have put out Magic the Gathering theme cupcakes (they went so fast, I didn’t get around to snapping a picture), but today the Cheese Cake (oh yeah.. State Fair Ribbon Winning) with D&D Minis on them.

There is nothing wrong with cake and mummy’s.

Too Many Remotes?

Written by andy on August 16th, 2008 in Hardware.

I am sure that there are some people out there that have something very similar to this:

toomanyremotes

It isn’t a major problem, but it does make a clutter and from time to time, the replacing of the batteries gets a little much for the wallet.

The solution?

I think that the Harmony 550 might be the solution.  The software for programming your separate devices is "ok", perhaps it was to late for me to start doing ‘tech’ things, but it took me like 15-25 mins to install the software and program the basic TV operations.  It works though..

So… can I trade a little ‘learning curve’ for a 7 to 1 remote replacement and the saving in battery replacements?  I think so.

Another Item for the Project

Written by andy on August 15th, 2008 in GamersCircle.

As I have been reporting, the project to turn my Xbox into a Media Center has been a complete success.  I am starting to take steps to make it more accessible.

The Xbox does play DVD’s, but you need to have the kit:

The gizmo on the right, plugs into one of the controller ports and allow you to remotely control the DVD play back.

I am not going to be using the remote, instead I will be using a programmable remote, but you need that one gizmo.

Stay tuned as I report on this further.

Editors Note: This worked like a champ via the media center software.

Easy Peezy

Written by andy on August 14th, 2008 in Hardware.

Open box, plug in power, plug in network cable, power on, wait for all HD lights to stop flickering, install software and the HP MV2120 500GB Media Vault is ready to be go.

I am not kidding either, setting up a share is a snap as well.  This was a lot easier than building a new computer, installing software, applying updates, etc.

This little library is the new file server for our home.  It is also an addition to the Xbox Media Center that I am in the progress of customizing the way I want.

To date, the above little dude is storing the complete .iso of:

Blade Trinity, Hot Fuzz, I Am Legend, Predator, Resident Evil Extinction, Tremors, Troy and Diary of the Dead.

Once I get this all fine tuned the way I want.  I will share what I did and how I did it.

In A Nut Shell

Written by andy on August 11th, 2008 in Hardware, Movies, Software.

The project that I have been talking about has been pretty successful.   Basically:

It allows you to:

Take a movie -

Say:

and stream (either the entire DVD or just the ripped movie) over your home network.

You utilize an original xbox along with some software , you can either ftp the files to the Xbox or stream from a source through the Xbox to your TV.

People have been doing it for years, but I ran into a situation where my 3 DVD carousals were starting to get tight on space.

I will post more details as to what I did and how soon.
